We have been using local feral bees to find productive, gentle and mite resistant queens. All of our breeder queens have produced 100 pounds of honey in the previous season, have been easy to work with and consistently have low mite counts.
We evaluate our queens through a variety of techniques to determine the level of mite resistance. We use a combination of mite washes and Harbo Assays to determine whether our queens are able to suppress mite reproduction.
Our queens are not mated in mini nucs. Our queens our mated in 5 frame nucs that allow them to actively lay for at least 21 days before being caged. Allowing a new to lay prolifically for 21 days, allows her ovaries to develop fully before being caged. This also allows us to get a better assessment of her laying pattern before selling her.
